Covid-19: China records 23 cases in the last 24 hours

The National Health Commission of China reported today that the Asian country has registered 23 new infections with the new coronavirus in the past 24 hours.

Of these, 15 are locally contagious, all of them in the northwestern province of Xinjiang, where an outbreak was detected more than three weeks ago.

The remaining eight cases were diagnosed among travelers from abroad, known as “imported” cases, five in Guangzhou province, two in Shanghai and one in Zhejiang.

Health officials detailed that, until midnight local time (17:00 on Saturday in Lisbon), 45 patients were discharged.

The number of active infections in mainland China is 817, 43 of which remain in serious condition.

The Commission did not announce further deaths from covid-19, the total remaining since the pandemic began at 4.634, among the 84.619 infected people officially diagnosed in China.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed about 722 deaths and infected more than 19,4 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.

After Europe succeeded China as the center of the pandemic in February, the American continent is now the one with the most confirmed cases and the most deaths.
