Domingos Soares de Oliveira: “there is currently no official situation between Benfica and coach Jorge Jesus”

"As we know, our president has a personal relationship with coach Jorge Jesus, so it is natural that he talks to the coach, but at this moment there is no official situation between Benfica and coach Jorge Jesus," said Domingos Soares de Oliveira.

The administrator of Sport Lisboa e Benfica, SAD, Domingos Soares de Oliveira said that at this moment "there is currently no official situation between Benfica and coach Jorge Jesus".

Asked if he could confirm the existence of direct and indirect contacts between the direction of the Benfica club and the Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus, the leader of the SAD 'red' said perpetually "I do not confirm any contact with the coach Jorge Jesus".

"As we know, our president has a personal relationship with coach Jorge Jesus, so it is natural that he talks to the coach, but at this moment there is no official situation between Benfica and coach Jorge Jesus," said Domingos Soares de Oliveira.

Jorge Jesus, who spent six seasons at the helm of Benfica's main football team, has been a name spoken in the national press as the possible coach for the next sporting season.

The leader was speaking in the question and answer session that followed the session for calculating the results of the bond loan launched by SAD benfiquista, in which he raised 50 million euros, in an operation in which demand exceeded supply by 1,4 times.

Domingos Soares de Oliveira explained that this operation resulted in a “clearly anticipatory movement”, since there is still some degree of uncertainty regarding the impact of Covid-19 on the Clube da Luz's accounts.

“Benfica continues to have a cash position that is good and healthy, but [we don't know] how the market will be impacted on three levels of our revenues. In particular, how will the transfer market behave, how will the ticketing market behave - whether or not we will have games with the public during the next year - and how will European competitions behave and, in particularly, how Benfica will evolve in these competitions ”, said the administrator of SAD incarnate.

"This bond loan allows us to have the necessary cash flow so that we can have the next year in all its aspects and not only in terms of investment in a more relaxed way", he added.

Given the robustness of the club's accounts, Domingos Soares de Oliveira guaranteed that Benfica will not enter the next transfer market window to make "sales with balances".

“We had doubts about how the market would behave in this transfer period, which is a different period. We started to see the first transfers with robust values and the European market is showing an interesting behavior, that is, as long as there are investments in the 10, 12 big clubs, these investments later have repercussions, because whoever sells to those clubs, gets more ability to buy. The market is expected to cheer up over the next few months. But we don't have any figures regarding sales needs ”, said Benfica's SAD administrator.

50 million will be able to support the strengthening of the main team

The amount raised in the bond loan may in part be channeled towards sports investment, but not towards the hiring of the next coach of the main football team.

Regarding sports investment, Domingos Soares de Oliveira said that “some people have commented in recent days if the success of this significant offer that we would have more investment capacity. My answer in this regard is that Benfica will be able to make that investment. Our work results from sporting success and everything we do is aimed at that sporting success, with a solid base from the point of view of swing structure. This reinforcement will effectively give us an additional capacity so that, if that is the wish, we can make these additional investments to guarantee this sporting success in the coming seasons ”.

And he added that this bond loan does not change the investment paradigm in Benfica's professional team. “There is no paradigm shift, I believe that there is sometimes little awareness of what Benfica's investment policy has been in its squad. I was doing the numbers calculation today and, since 2010 and 2011, we have an average annual investment that exceeds 55 million euros. If we look at the other years, we already had years in which we made an investment of 84 million euros, the investment at this time was over 60 million euros. Benfica never stopped investing against a blind bet in Seixal. There is no reason here. We have already carried out recourse operations to the market for the purpose of bond loans of amounts greater than or equal to what we have now done. And there is and never has been a brake on this investment ”.

As for the possibility of channeling part of these funds to the coach's contracting, the incarnated SAD administrator was clear: “No”.

“The cost of the coach in a house like ours, which has a turnover of around 300 million euros, is not exactly the cost of the coach being lower or higher, which will depend on the success of the bond loan,” explained Domingos Soares de Oliveira .
