India and US reach new daily highs for cases confirmed by Covid-19

The United States recorded more than 24 confirmed cases by Covid-63 in the last 19 hours, while India has exceeded 27 new confirmations. Both set new records in terms of new positive diagnoses in one day.

India has recorded 27.114 covid-19 infections in the past 24 hours, a new daily maximum of cases, according to official data, prompting nearly a dozen states to impose new confinement.

In total, since the beginning of the pandemic, India has recorded 820.916 cases of the new coronavirus and 22.123 dead, 519 of which in the past 24 hours alone.

A resurgence of cases has jumped cases from 600.000 to over 800.000 in just nine days.

Eight of the 28 Indian states, including the hardest hit Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and New Delhi, are responsible for almost 90% of all infections.

India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, with almost 230 million inhabitants, announced the confinement over the weekend, starting tonight. All stores will remain closed, except pharmacies and supermarkets or establishments selling food products.

India is the third country with the most cases of the new coronavirus, after the United States and Brazil.

65.305 cases in 24 hours in the USA

The United States has recorded 65.305 cases of covid-19 in the past 24 hours, a new daily high in the country that is by far the most infected in the world, according to a report by Johns Hopkins University.

Since Wednesday the country has been registering daily records of infections.

In the last 24 hours the country has also registered 863 deaths.

The country accounts for 133.969 deaths and 3.173.446 confirmed cases since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the balance sheet made at 20:00 on Friday (01:00 today in Lisbon), by the news agency Efe.

The United States is the country in the world with the most deaths and the most confirmed cases of infection.

The number of daily cases has returned to more than 60.000 (for the second time this week) as a result of the outbreak of infections in the southern and western states, such as Florida, Texas, California, Arizona, Georgia.

However, New York remains the state most severely affected by the coronavirus in the United States, with 400.299 confirmed cases and 32.307 deaths, just less than in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Italy and Mexico.

It follows New Jersey, with 15.479 dead, Massachusetts, with 8.296, and Illinois, with 7.345.

In terms of infections, California is only behind New York with 304.707, Florida in third with 244.151 and Texas in fourth with 243.285.

The University of Washington Institute of Health Metrics and Assessments, whose models for the evolution of the pandemic are often used by the White House, estimates that the country will reach October with about 185 deaths.

The covid-19 pandemic has already claimed more than 556 deaths and infected more than 12,36 million people in 196 countries and territories, according to a report made by the French agency AFP.

In Portugal, 1.646 people of the 45.679 confirmed as infected died, according to the most recent bulletin from the Directorate-General for Health.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December in Wuhan, a city in central China.
