Madeira wants to host political meeting during Portuguese Presidency of the EU Council

The objective, according to the minister, is to envisage in global and European terms the importance of the Outermost Regions (ORs) in the affirmation of the EU as a world power.

The President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, said this Wednesday that he transmitted to the President of the Commission, during the Council of State, that it would be important for events to take place during the Presidency of the European Union both in Madeira and in the Azores.

The objective, according to the minister, is to envisage in global and European terms the importance of the Outermost Regions (ORs) in the affirmation of the EU as a world power.

“Nowadays the EU has a continental dimension mainly due to the weight of the great European power that is Germany, but with the departure of the United Kingdom, it is very important, for reasons of affirmation of the EU in the world, to underline the importance that the ORs, Madeira, the Azores, the Canaries and the other islands have the EU's affirmation in the world, so I made that call ”, he stressed.

Miguel Albuquerque stressed that there was a good receptivity on the part of the President to this idea, "who realized exactly what I meant". “Sometimes so-and-so in the national government find it difficult to understand what geopolitics is, but I think the President of the European Commission and the EU has to understand”, he reinforced.
