The national sector of the canned fish industries last year was worth about 323 million euros, of which about 70%, 226 million euros, respected exports, a total of 43 thousand tons. “In the last year, exports, both in quantity and in value, decreased by about 5%, maintaining, however, the positive trade balance”, assures José Maria Freitas, president of ANICP - National Association of Canned Food Industry Peixe, in an interview with Jornal Económico.
To cope with this decrease, ANICP launched a promotional campaign to encourage the internal consumption of canned fish, particularly in large distribution areas. “Any increase in consumption, however small, justifies the effort of this campaign. However, we have high expectations regarding the overall impact of the result that we idealize to correspond to an increase of 5% ”, which would raise sales in this sector to around 340 million euros in 2020, particularly in domestic consumption, which would increase from around from 97 million to around 102 million euros. Even so, according to data from INE - National Institute of Statistics, “until 2019 we exported more preserves than we imported and, therefore, the trade balance is positive”.
