The PS showed concern about the state of tourism in Madeira, and accused the regional executive of advertising a recovery in the sector that does not exist.
At this moment, we see that the recovery is not the one we would like ”, said Sérgio Gonçalves, deputy of PS Madeira, adding that there was growth in August, compared to July, but that from then on,“ we have always had reductions in the number of weekly frequencies of flights here at Madeira airport ”.
The socialist says that in August there were 140 weekly flights, in September 130, in October 100, in November 85 and now, although 77 thousand seats were presented for the month of December, “this corresponds effectively to a weekly average of about 100 flights, therefore 40% less than what we had in August ”.
The deputy of the PS says that this is worrying, reinforcing that the regional executive is “insisting” on an “advertising campaign regarding the recovery that is not taking place, in a situation in which companies in the sector are going through numerous difficulties and where unemployment, specifically in the tourism sector, may decline to frightening numbers ”.
Sérgio Gonçalves says that despite the certification of the destination as a safe destination against biological risk, having merit, “is not having an effect. The PS deputy says that it has no effect on the business sector “which has not joined the initiative - at the moment we have only six certified companies, which gives less than one company per month certified under this SGS process” and on the other “no there is a reflection on the arrival of tourists, because, effectively, if the destination is safe, if this has been the motto for the resumption announced by the Regional Government, there is no reason then to see repeatedly the number of weekly frequencies, flights to the airport of the Madeira, to be substantially reduced ”.
