The Social Democrats warn that the vaccines acquired by the Government are “enough to vaccinate all people who want to do it” and stress that this is an even more “worrying” reality, taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) sent several questions this Monday to the Ministry of Health, denouncing "delays" and "failures" in the flu vaccination campaign. The Social Democrats warn that the vaccines acquired by the Government are “sufficient to vaccinate all the people who want to do it” and stress that this is an even more “worrying” reality, taking into account the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, the PSD bench questions what is the exact number of doses of flu vaccines that the Socialist Executive determined to acquire for the flu season of 2020/2021 and what the exact delivery schedule is. The PSD also wants to know how many vaccines are currently available at the National Health Service (SNS) and in community pharmacies.

This is because, according to the PSD, the 2,5 million doses announced by the Government “are enough” to vaccinate all the people who wished to do so, given that in Portugal there are “2,3 million elderly people and around two million patients chronic under the age of 65 ”. In addition to these, there are also pregnant women, health professionals and residential structures for elderly people and prisoners in prison establishments, who should also be vaccinated.

"Unfortunately, not only are not enough flu vaccines being distributed, as its availability is registering serious failures, both in health centers and in community pharmacies themselves, which, so far, have received just over half of stock of SNS vaccines assigned to them and which correspond to only 10% of the total ”, warns the PSD bench.

Alerting that there are thousands of users of the NHS who are despairing “in endless lines” of health centers, the PSD also questions why more doses of vaccines were not purchased for the flu season of 2020/2021 and why the Government does not significantly increase the stock doses of SNS vaccines, free of charge.

PSD deputies also challenge the Government to ensure that vaccines will not be lacking in health centers and community pharmacies, in addition to asking for confirmation that “by the first week of December” all SNS users who want to take the vaccine to flu can do it.
