Spain today registered 23.580 new cases of covid-19, a new high since the beginning of the pandemic, bringing the total number of infected people to 1.160.083 in the country, according to figures released by the Spanish Ministry of Health.
Health authorities also accounted for another 173 deaths attributed to covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 35.639.
24 people were admitted to hospitals with the disease in the last 2.349 hours, 443 of which in Catalonia, the same number in Andalusia, and 330 in Madrid.
Across the country, there are 17.520 people hospitalized with the disease, including 2.404 patients in intensive care units.
The level of accumulated incidence in Spain has risen today to 468 cases diagnosed per 100.000 inhabitants in the last 14 days, with the highest levels being those of Navarra (1.172), Melilla (1.290), Aragon (984), Rioja (736) , Castile and Leon (735), Catalonia (681), Ceuta (653) and Basque Country (554).
The Spanish parliament today approved the extension of the state of emergency to fight the covid-19 pandemic for six months, until May 09, 2021.
The measure that has been in force since last Sunday, but which the Government could only decree for two weeks, was approved by a comfortable majority of 194 votes in favor, 53 against and 99 deputies abstained.
The state of emergency to try to counter the progression of the pandemic in Spain establishes the mandatory curfew, except in the Canaries, from 23:00 to 06:00, with each autonomous community being able to advance or delay the measure by one hour.
The measure also grants each of the Spanish regions the necessary legal instruments to decide measures such as the confinement of areas within their territory, municipalities or even the entire autonomous community.
On the other hand, the regional government of Madrid decided to confine the population of the region for the next two weekends, which are extended until Monday due to two holidays, as a way to fight the covid-19 pandemic.
The president of this Spanish autonomous community, which has 6,7 million inhabitants, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, defended that she wanted to "close" the region "just the indispensable days" to prevent the usual displacement of millions of Madrid people on these occasions.
The right-wing regional executive thus maintains a strong arm with the central socialist government, which defends more prolonged regional confinements, although the health sector is the responsibility of the autonomous communities.
The region where the Spanish capital is located thus distances itself from the majority of the autonomous communities in the country, which in recent days have announced confinements at the level of the whole community and / or also at the level of their municipalities.
The covid-19 pandemic has caused more than 1,1 million deaths worldwide since December last year, including 2.428 in Portugal.
In Europe, the highest number of fatalities is recorded in the United Kingdom (45.955 dead, more than 965 thousand cases), followed by Italy (38.122 dead, more than 616 thousand cases), France (35.541 dead, more than one 1,1 , 35.639 million cases) and Spain (1,16 deaths, more than XNUMX million cases).
