Covid-19: Mexico with record of more than 21 thousand cases in a single day

Mexico accounted for 21.366 cases of covid-19 in the past 24 hours, the highest since the pandemic began, totaling more than 1,6 million infections (1.609.735), Mexican authorities announced.

The day before, the country had already reached a new daily high, with 16.468 confirmed cases.

In the last 24 hours, there were also 1.106 deaths caused by the new coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths to 139.022.

Mexico continues to be the fourth country in the world with the most deaths from covid-19, after the United States, Brazil and India, and the 13th in number of infections, according to the count of the American University Johns Hopkins.

The country, which in recent weeks has seen an increase in cases and fatalities from covid-19, started the vaccination campaign on December 24, having already vaccinated 415.417 health workers, health officials said on Friday ( Saturday morning in Portugal).

Mexico was one of the first countries in the world to start vaccination, betting on immunizing the population, of 130 million inhabitants, until March 2022.

The covid-19 pandemic caused more than 2 million deaths resulting from more than 93 million cases of infection worldwide, according to a report by the French agency AFP.

The disease is transmitted by a new coronavirus detected in late December 2019 in Wuhan, a city in central China.
